Abstract

Digital technology is regarded as the mother of civilization which plays an important role in every sphere of human endeavour. Digital technology has witnessed a massive transformation over the years which makes teaching and learning easier and more enjoyable, and has changed the ways people live, learn, work, and play. This study aims to achieve the following goals: the challenges engineering students faced with digital technology, the lecturer’s perceptions to digital technology, students' learning engagement and academic performance. An online questionnaire was developed and shared to different students and lecturer’s platforms in different faculties, and the sample of this study consists of 350 participants, with 278 students of Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun State and 72 lecturers from online platform. The result shows that majority of students with 40.29 % complained about weak internet connection as their major challenges with digital technology for learning, while from the lecturer’s perceptions several anomalies about student attitudes to digital technology were identified, which includes: addiction of students to social media platform, plagiarism, copy of content from unreliable sources and students’ overdependence on smart devices among others. The paper recommended that students with smart devices should be encouraged to use it to enhance their academic research and technical skills in their various fields of study rather than the usual chatting and catching funs with friends and family all the time. These will go a long way to improve their problem-solving techniques and academic performance.
