Abstract
In the arts, especially in the study of Music and Dance, we are deeply invested in the primacy of the object and necessity of the live performance while still relying on old and outdated technology which has contributed to the stagnancy experienced in the educational advancement of music and dance in the aspect of practice and performance in Nigerian tertiary Institutions. Technology is often seen as our nemesis - it is cheaper, easier, a virtual version and reflection of something real. Many scholars and practitioners in the arts battle technology invasion since they prefer to perform their own version musical refrains and/ dance routines to the extent that those who do not remember their own history are condemned to repeat the same. Despite the preservative gains of these physical refrains and routines, technology has not in any way led to the dearth of the two arts forms: African music and dance, but instead contributed to their spread and helped create new audiences spanning to and around the world. Though live training, practice, experiences and performances in African music and dance education cannot be replaced with technology but it can rather be extended to it. However, this paper, seeks to discover how scholars and practitioners of music and dance should embrace and integrate technology to promote their works since a yearning gap in knowledge and understanding of advancing these new technologies that has been created. To achieve this, this paper adopted literary (text), online materials (analysing selected short skits) and interviews of lecturers drawn from Music Technology departments, Music and Theatre Arts departments (dance) from selected Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in Nigeria. This study concludes that successful application of new and constant upgrade of new technologies will enhance educational advancement of African Music and Dance in Nigerian tertiary Institutions.
