Abstract

Anthills are common sight in many communities dreaded and seen to constitute nuisance. Anthill is made of different types of soil and engineers are interested in their engineering properties and its effect on the surrounding soils around its habitation. Geotechnical properties of anthill from three different Local Governments in Ogun State, Nigeria were assessed. Soil samples were collected from existing anthills and at four different points equidistant to the anthills. The geotechnical properties tested for were the Sieve analysis, Atterberg Limits, compaction test and California bearing ratio (CBR). The particle analysis results showed that the sample is largely constituted of sands which ranges from fine to medium grain size. The Atterberg limits results revealed that the anthills and their surrounding soil were predominantly soil with intermediate plasticity except the anthill at location C that has high plasticity percentage due to its high clay content. The optimum moisture content (OMC) ranged from 7.14 – 18.60% while the maximum dry density (MDD) ranged from 1.054 – 2.40 Mg/m3. The anthills at the three locations have the C.B.R values of 34.44, 21.94 and 31.31 respectively while at their surroundings, the C.B.R values in percent were 17.65, 11.93 and 21.94 thereby indicating the anthills at A, B, C and the surrounding sample at B are all good as base and sub-base materials while that of the surrounding samples at A and C are fair for sub-grade. The study has shown that the geotechnical properties of the anthill soil is better than that of the adjacent surrounding soil.
